Horton Smith, Byron Nelson, Henry Picard, Jimmy Demaret, Craig Wood, Gene Sarazen, Herman Keiser at the 1947 Masters.
The Masters Tournament, one of golf's four major championship events, has been held 85 times at Augusta National Golf Club since 1934, with 54 different players capturing the Masters trophy and a coveted green jacket.
Horton Smith was the first player to win that first Masters in 1934. A defending champion has gone on to win only three times in Masters history (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods). On 17 occasions, a player captured the win in a playoff.
The only years the Masters were not played was between 1943-1945 due to World War II. Additionally, the tournament was rescheduled from it's original April date in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hideki Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters, his first. No amateur has ever won the Masters. Ken Venturi was the closest amateur to winning in 1956. He held the 54-hole lead over the likes of Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer. Jack Burke, Jr. became a Masters winner after besting Venturi by a stroke in the final round.
