We talked to 2022 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Cameron Young's coach & father, David Young, PGA, in the run up to the 2022 PGA Championship. This is their story.
When it comes to Cameron Young and his father David …. “It just works.”
“We think a lot alike,” said David Young, PGA. “When we golf together, when we hit balls together, it never feels forced… even when we work on his swing.”
Cameron Young is one of the best drivers on tour; and with that, his dad says his son’s major goal for the week is not so much result based. Rather, it is how to get to the end result. “It’s going to be all about hitting greens in regulation,” David Young said, “that is where the scoring happens at Southern Hills.”
When asked how the 2022 PGA Championship venue suited his son, “He plays well on a big golf course. Long course setups suit his game.” Playing nearly 7,600 yards, the course is definitely going to be a beast, which was right up Cameron Young’s alley.
David and Cameron are not ones to sit after a round and go over every single hole, every single shot, and every single mistake. Instead, they have a healthy parent/child approach to a post-round recap.
“If he plays well, there is not much to talk about. If he plays okay, we may chat about a few things. If he does not play how he wants to- that’s when I just let him vent for a while,” David Young says.
Cameron Young was paired with Sam Burns and Davis Riley the first two rounds of the championship, two guys he happened to have played against in junior and college golf on several occasions.
“It’s going to feel really comfortable to play with those boys,” David Young said, “it’s going to be awesome to watch them all play together again.”
Where will David be watching his son play in this major championship? According to David, he usually watches from afar on TV screens, hoping to catch what he can while he is still working at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York as the Head Golf Professional. But not this time. David will be watching his son play in the 2022 PGA Championship on the grounds, hole by hole.
“I’m used to watching him on TV. All I see there is where the ball ends up. Now, I’ll be able to watch in person and see everything that’s going on. I get to see his swing and his game, not just the result,” Young said, “I’m just really excited.”
If you happened to watch Cameron Young play at Southern Hills, you probably saw a proud father in the crowd. David Young was there watching his every move.
