Lesson Learned: Follow Cameron Davis’ Balanced Approach for On-Course Success

Cameron Davis’  performance to claim the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic provided us with a great example of where our game can go when we have a balanced attack.
Cam’s stats of note for the week include the following…
  • Driving Accuracy 71% (t59)
  • Driving Distance 299 (10)
  • Greens in Reg 76% (t41)
  • Scrambling 76% (t23)
  • Putts Per GIR 1.69 (21)
Cam ranked 4th in Strokes gained Tee-to-Green. That is the combination of strokes gained Off-The-Tee + strokes gained Approach-The-Green + strokes gained Around-The-Green. So that high finish in Tee-to-Green plus a decent putting week, averaging 1.69 putts per green hit in regulation, was enough to get it done at the Detroit Golf Club.
So, What Can You Take from This?
While you are not likely competing against the world’s best week in and week out, Cam’s recipe for success, and that of most of his peers, can teach you a lot on how to approach your own game.
Many times, amateurs’ approach to practice and playing tends to be one sided. What I mean by this is many am’s will concede to the fact that one part of their game is stronger than others and they will lean heavily into that strong aspect as their recipe for success. If you are a strong putter for example, you may spend most of your practice time on continuing to develop your putting and just live with the fact that you struggle off the tee. When you hit the course, you go into your round with the mindset that your putting will need to be your saving grace and you do your best to manage the rest of your game.
This thinking may be placing a great deal of pressure on your strength and lead to you spinning your tires with the scores you wind up shooting.
