What to expect upon arrival at a golf course
Published on
For a newcomer to the game, the entrance to a golf club can first seem a little intimidating. You’ve just pulled into “the club.” Now what? Nothing looks familiar. There’s no one around.
No two golf clubs are alike, but there are some similarities that can guide you along the way.

Look for the Bag Drop
Most often, when you pull into a golf club, you’ll see a sign that says “Bag Drop.” If so, drive up to this area, so a staff member can greet you and take your golf bag out of your car. But what if you didn’t bring golf equipment with you? No problem! Simply, drive directly to the guest parking area, and skip the bag drop.
Locate the Pro Shop
Either way, you should next look for the Golf Shop or Pro Shop. They’re the same thing, but may be labeled differently, depending on what facility you visit. Don’t hesitate to ask one of the staff members where you can check in. You can also watch other folks who are arriving, and follow them into the Golf Shop. Usually, you will stop at the Golf Shop prior to any round of golf or lesson. It’s also a great place to meet up with your playing partners.
Check-in time
During check in, let the attending staff member know that you’re there for a round of golf, lesson or other program.
Also, let them know that it’s your first time at the facility and how you would love some assistance in getting oriented — including the location of the locker rooms, practice area and first tee, as well as any other club policies or protocols they think would be helpful for a new golfer.
Everyone has a first time at a golf facility, so don’t be shy about asking for help or directions. Many facilities offer new golfer programs that will orient you with ease to the club, basic rules, etiquette, and fundamentals of the game.
And you can even shadow others who appear to be regulars at the club, in order to fit right in. Now, sit back, relax and enjoy your game of golf.
